Stress and the Workplace
Stress impacts our overall health. Our bodies are programmed with a set of automatic responses to deal with stress. This system is effective for the short term, but our bodies deal with all types of stress in the same way. Experiencing stress for long periods of time – such as constant stressors at work – will activate this system, but it doesn't get the chance to turn off. This response to stress has been called the “Generalized Stress Response.”

Massage and the Workplace
Businesses of all shapes and sizes are incorporating holistic health practices into the daily routines of their employees to help combat the effects of work-related stress.

Seated massage therapy is an easy, visible, non-intrusive way to provide relief and preventative therapy against stress-related illness. It boosts morale and work efficiency at the same time.

A seated massage session is either 15 or 30 minutes long. The client remains clothed as the areas of the lower back and hips, mid-back, upper back, shoulders, arms, hands, neck, and head are massaged to the depth of pressure of choice.

After a session, most people feel relaxed and energized with sharpened alertness and focus. This is due to a number of factors, including increased oxygen flow and the release of endorphins. A client may experience heightened awareness, deeper sleep and greater productivity for days following a session.

Weekly, bi-monthly or monthly massage is recommended, as frequency of massage is often as important as the length of a session.

The Annals of Internal Medicine reports 25% of workers surveyed suffer fatigue for periods longer than two weeks. Job stress is high on the list of causes for this fatigue. In fact, the United Nations' International Labor Organization indicates that 75% of American workers consider their jobs stressful.
